The Most Common Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make (And How to Avoid Them)

Thursday, April 24 2014

We’ve all heard from entrepreneurs that starting their own business is one of the most satisfying experiences they’ve ever had. An experience that motivates you in a ways that working for a company doesn’t. They talk about the indescribable feeling when you have your first success. They also tell you that your work becomes your life, but not in the same way as when they were pulling 80 hour weeks in banking or consulting, or whatever other job they had before. As an entrepreneur they “working” 24/7 but have the gratifying trade-off of being able to pick up their kids from school, or wake up a little later (or a little earlier), or to go out for a long run in the middle of a long, stressful day to clear their head.

So true. The best ideas are the simple ones. In my own work, whether it be finding solutions to the adaptation of the expat family, the problems in family courts, or why local search directories (yelp.com, etc.) are still in the red despite impressive revenues. The solutions are much simpler than people realize. As E.F. Schumacher said “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, & more violent. It takes a touch of genius — & a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.”
