Happy April Fool's Day, or rather Happy International Fun at Work Day!
When was the last time you heard "work" and "fun" in the same sentence? Ever since companies started introducing gamification into their culture strategy, the concept of play at work has become ubiquitous. Fortune 500 companies from Google to L'Oreal and UPS have incorporated this "new" way of increasing productivity and worker contentment.

20140401-fta-gamification-strategy-team-jumpingGamification is also widely used to increase consumer loyalty and engagement. What is it? It is essentially the application of game theory mechanics (literally playing a game) to non-game situations. If done correctly, it can drive up engagement and productivity. It is also based on the principles of social business. When the stakes are meaningful, people will feel more motivated to participate. As they are having fun, they won't realize that they are actually doing work.

Experts warn, however, against the dangers of creating abstract point-systems, that quickly burn-out employees and consumers alike. For gamification to work, the "game" much be well thought out and be well integrated into all areas of an organization. Deloitte named it one of the Tech Trends of 2013.

The main idea behind gamification is motivation. It's common knowledge that most people who love what they do don't think of their job as work, for them its their passion and hobby. So, if you have been feeling a bit bogged down by your "To Do" list take some time to find ways to make it fun, after all, it is April Fool's Day, and what better day to have Fun at Work?
